LEXICO-SEMANTIC FEATURES OF ENGLISH TERMS OF THE SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE OF PSYCHOLOGY (TRANSLATION ASPECT)

Abstract

The article highlights the results of the study of lexical and semantic features of psychological terms in the translation aspect on the basis of English texts of popular science psychology and their corresponding translations into Ukrainian. It is emphasized that the process of translation of psychological specialized texts is to some extent influenced by the consideration of psychology as humanities. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the semantic analysis of the source text, as well as not only linguistic factors, but also extralinguistic contexts of the use of terms. The selected thematic groups of English-language psychological terms (“General scientific terms”, “Mental processes”, “Behavioral models”, “Emotions and feelings”, “Relationships”, “Mental illnesses and disorders”, “Symptoms”, “Anatomy”) are characterized. Within each thematic group, the results of translation analysis of ways of rendering English psychological terms in Ukrainian are outlined. It is established that in the Ukrainian translation of English terms from the texts of different genres of the specialized language of psychology, there is a tendency to choose a dictionary equivalent or a variant equivalent, as well as the use of calque. It is noted that the variant equivalent is the vast majority of the analyzed cases due to the ambiguity of certain terminological units, morphological or syntactic forms not typical of the Ukrainian terminology of the analyzed sphere. The choice of calque for a large number of English-language psychological terms is explained by the interregional nature of the specialized language of psychology as a whole, as well as a significant number of borrowed words in both English and Ukrainian terminology. It was found that the methods of concretization, generalization and addition are mostly applied to non-equivalent vocabulary or for successful adaptation of the term in the Ukrainian terminological context.
